Different Types of Online Communities You Can Join to Make More Friends

There are all sorts of challenges facing someone when moving to a new city or a new area. How will you settle? How will you make friends if you’re moving alone? Luckily, the modern world affords lots of opportunities to meet new people who share the same interests and passions as you. You might be moving to a new country which, if you are, could lead to the sort of issues we’ve detailed here. However, once you’re settled in a new place it’s time to put those worries aside and meet new people.

When I moved to NYC, I experienced first hand that making new friends can be difficult. I wrote about five ways to meet new people and make friends. So here are four more online communities you can join to expand your social network and make more friends.

1. Social Media

Social media is a great way to meet new people. It might be a platform for some to share views you disagree with, but if you dig deep enough you can find plenty in your local area, or in the wider world. If you have just moved to a new area then it’s worth searching for groups that align with your interests. Perhaps you like live music, so a quick search for Live Music in New York City could work. Do be careful to ensure you’re as safe as possible on social media, perhaps follow the Staying Safe Online guide to ensure you’re protected whilst online. It may only be precautionary but some online communities can be tricky to navigate if you’re new.

2. Online Gaming

If you want to meet people from the safety of your own home, online gaming is a great way to go. There are plenty of female gaming communities out there and some even meeting in person, such as those who meet up in New York to play the card game Gwent which originated in the Witcher gaming series. There are also plenty of online poker communities you can join, with plenty of players now taking part as much for the social aspect as a desire to win money. BagoGames in-depth review of PPPoker explains how the app allows players to create their own social clubs and connect with people from over 100 countries. With such a rich history of poker players in New York City, this app is perfect for connecting with like-minded locals looking to explore their heritage. It offers a safe environment and caters for players who want the social experience just as much as the competition.

3. Reddit

Reddit is a great place to meet likeminded people. It’s essentially a huge message board which is divided into sub-topics, meaning whatever you’re into there should be a community there for you. Described by USA Today as the front page to the internet, it can be a great resource for meeting and interacting with new people. You can discuss news or current affairs, different hobbies and exchange hints and tips of various subjects. There’s also a ‘need a friend’ feature which is perfect for just reaching out to people and connecting. It might be someone in the same city as you, it might be a person on the other side of the world, but if you need discussion and interaction then Reddit is the place to be.

4. Goodreads

If you like to spend your days with your head in a book, but can’t find anyone to discuss it with once you’ve finished, Goodreads might be the perfect place to find new friends. It’s an app on which you can log everything you’ve read, offering reviews and opinions as well as a rating. Other users do the same and you can see their input too. Unlike some of the other online communities, this is one that you can feed into with your own passion for literature and still connect with people in a real and meaningful way.
