Lilac Chocolate Cupcakes Recipe

lilac cupcakes

Lilac is one my favorite flowers come summer and chocolate one of my favorite treats. Not as in eating chocolate off the bark, but in cakes. While I have been looking into doing more and more floral recipes, there is a time where you need to choose between adding the flowers in your recipe or just giving your cakes a floral look. We’ll go for the latter on this one with those delicious lilac chocolate cupcakes.

No, they do not taste of lilac. The frosting only looks like lilac flowers. It could taste of lilac should you add some lilac simple syrup or extract. But for this one, I wanted to start small and just focus on trying to gett the frosting right.

  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  5. In a smaller bowl, combine milk and sour cream. Set aside.
  6. Alternating between dry and wet ingredients, add to the butter-sugar mixture in two parts.
  7. Using a cookie or ice cream scoop, scoop out cake batter into the lined cupcake pan. About 2 scoops should do, or fill cupcake liners up to 3/4.

Cream cheese frosting

  1. In the bowl of a standing mixer, beat together cream cheese and butter until smooth.
  2. With the mixer running on low, add icing sugar one cup at a time.
  3. Then, add milk and vanilla.
  4. Beat on high until frosting is fluffy.
  5. Separate frosting into two bowls. Add purple to one and pink to the other.

Assemble the lilac chocolate cupcakes

  1. Fit a large piping bag with a 2D piping nozzle. Fill one smaller piping bag with the pink frosting, and another one with purple. Add both bags to the large piping bag.
  2. Starting at the centre of the cupcake, pipe flowers of frosting. Continue piping around the centre dollop until you reach the edge of the cupcake.
  3. Repeat on all the cupcakes.
  4. Enjoy!
