We already all know that a little black dress is a wardrobe staple that can be worn for any occasion. For the office, for the street, for the clubs. Last year, I made the case of a little white dress which is just as essential to your summer closet! This year, I am making the case of the black midi dress that you did not know you needed!
Mostly because the style makes it appropriate no matter what!
I always struggle when it comes to buying a dress for a special occasion. Back in the days, I used to pick really fancy ensembles for weddings or other occasions, even though I knew very well I’d never wear them again. They looked amazing but let’s face it, I was not gonna wear those for work or university and by the time there was another wedding to attend, the outfit probably would no longer fit me.
Taking the risk and wait for the next occasion is not very sustainable.
Last year, I went to my cousin’s wedding wearing a little white dress. The one I said was essential to any wardrobe. It was so simple, but fit me so well, styling it up with a colorful bag, a black blazer and high heels made it the perfect outfit! It was so basic I was able to style it down and wear it multiple times!
A versatile dress is the perfect dress for a wedding, baptism, graduation, etc. Sure it is not as mind blowing as a cocktail dress, but at least it is a safe investment.
I was in that state of mind when I picked this black midi dress as Select Fashion asked me to work with them again on some outfits.
I love short skirts and skater dresses but as of late, I have found myself moving away from those styles and wear midi dresses and skirts more and more often. They are also perfect for mid-season.
So, when I looked through Select Fashion’s website, I wanted a dress that was basic yet had an interesting design; monochrome so that it could be styled easily; and versatile enough so that I could be worn in any occasion. Which is how I ended up picking this black midi dress.
The black midi dress, a chiffon dress, has a halter neck design, a tie waist detailing and a dip hem finish. The black under skirt stops mid-thigh while the mesh longer asymmetrical skirt stops below the knees at the front and at ankle level at the back. It is a really floaty material and really easy to wear.
I styled it with a denim jacket for a more casual look but a blazer would have styled it up. Since the dress is black, the touches of colors come from the accessories – my Furla bag and python sandals from Vionic UK. As it is, changing the jacket to something more elegant, would be enough to turn this outfit into a wedding guest outfit.
Sometimes, it is just a small change that can make a entire different outfit. Which also shows how versatile and occasion-worthy this black midi dress is.

How often do you wear a fancy dress? Do you happen to wear a wedding guest dress again? Or do you go for versatile dresses with multiple use? What do you think of this dress?
Thanks a lot for stopping by. Hope you like this post.
See you soon,
